Lost in Time? The Socialist Modernist Monuments of the Former Yugoslavia and Their Shifting Conceptualization

This paper explores the “lost language” of monuments erected in former Yugoslavia from 1960s to 1980s—more precisely, 25 national captured by lens photographer Jan Kempenaers over span three years (2006−2009), and published monograph Spomenik [Monument] (2010). By combining approach cognitive linguistics cultural studies, particular that Forceville (“Identifi cation”, “Metaphor”, “Agendas”), Kövecses (Culture, Context), Ortiz, Kirn Burghardt, this aims explore conceptual metaphors embedded these as part a specifi c symbolic landscape, immanent countries at historical point their four-decades-long political, social, merger, well current possibilities limitations visual/multimodal decodifi cation memorials.
